130: The Perfect Feminist Does Not Exist (And That’s Okay)

TW: discussion of pregnancy, abortion, rape and incest in light of the recent Supreme Court overturning of Roe v Wade

In this week’s episode we’re discussing the recent events in the US where the Supreme Court ruling overturned Roe v Wade, removing a woman’s right to access an abortion. We’re also discussing the bigger picture of feminism, being a ‘bad feminist’ and why there can be no perfect, single version of feminism because there is no universal experience for women. If we all get caught up nitpicking the minutiae of whether it’s “feminist” to watch SATC or to enjoy wearing make-up, we miss the bigger opportunity to come together to support the fundamental right for equality and a woman’s right to choose.

Feminism can be the version that’s right for you, but it has to mean supporting all women in the choices they make about their own life, even if you wouldn’t make that choice yourself.

However despite it being so important it isn’t always clear how to lead in the best way. 128: Forgiveness

Forgiveness is a big topic and a tricky thing to navigate which is why this week we’re discussing not whether you should forgive or not, but the benefits to forgiveness in terms of self-growth, self-healing and acceptance. The long term impact of holding onto resentment can be really damaging mentally and emotionally so we wanted to talk about ways that you can make forgiveness something that serves you, without ever needing to tell the person you forgive or let them back into your life.

Everyone’s own situation is so nuanced which is why we’re sharing a little bit about our own journey of forgiveness and seeing it as something for us, rather than for the person or thing we’re forgiving.

127: Setting and Maintaining Boundaries

Boundaries were blurred between our work and home life during the pandemic, but now things are more normal and we’re socialising, seeing friends and family and back in the office, it’s easy to forget the importance of setting and maintaining boundaries, whether they are emotional, social, relationship-related, work-related or time-related.

Setting boundaries can seem easy, but maintaining them is the hard part and we’re discussing why setting and maintaining boundaries is an important act of self-care and self-respect which should be prioritised by you and respected by others around you.

Relationships are a two-way street, whether they’re romantic relationships, friendships, workplace dynamics or the relationships you have with your family. Learning more about yourself and how you can then understand others means that you can improve the relationships you have. For us, learning about our Love Languages and completing personality tests like Enneagram tests have really helped us learn more about ourselves, each other and our partners so this week we wanted to share with you why we think they’re so great and how they can help us all grow in relationships.

125: It’s Not All About You: What Happens When You Can’t Be 100% Selfish Anymore

This week’s topic is a bit different because we’re talking about reaching the age where we can no longer be 100% selfish or self-indulgent. While we often have a theme of putting yourself first and setting boundaries and doing what’s right for you, we also want to talk about the other side of that – the point in our lives where we have to consider what impact our decisions can have on other people in our lives. Many of us are now sharing our lives with a partner or child, or perhaps you have more financial responsibility or you’re caring for an elderly parent or relative, these big life changes might not be something you had to consider 10 or 15 years ago, so we’re chatting abut how that dynamic changes our decision making.

121: Working on your Mindset

We’ve spoken about positive self-talk and the importance of prioritising your happiness but we also want to talk about how you can actually start to work on your mindset. Working on your mindset generally can help you become more resilient, help you process challenges more effectively and help you be a more compassionate or forgiving person. It’s a constant journey and can be a lot of hard work which is why we think it’s important to talk about how to get started and work on your own mindset, beyond affirmations or practising gratitude.
